The Best Scariest iPad Gaming Apps

Sometimes evil is a dish best served cold. And in the horror gaming genre there is no better time to hunker down with your favorite Zombie slasher game than the dark and deadness of winter.

If a fright fest is what you want, you’re in luck, because we’ve got seven of the scariest iPad downloads. Caution: before playing your bed, lock the door and at least leave a nightlight on somewhere.

Scene It? Horror HD (Screenlife LLC, $4.99)

If you’re a fan of trivia but want something a little different from the other Scene It? games that are available, we’ve got just the ticket for you. Scene It? Horror HD lets you answer trivia questions both between 30 distinctive single player games and multiplayer, supported via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. You can also play along with the game’s Scream Machine, adjusting blood-curdling sound effects through a cool soundboard set-up. What’ll really shake you to your core, though, are film clips from some of the greatest horror flicks of all time, including A Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Army of Darkness. This one’s best recommended for those over the age of 17, due to gore and shock value, but it’s certainly worthwhile for fans of the genre.

Dracula: The Official Stoker Family Edition (PadWorx Digital Media Inc., $4.99)

There are a number of excellent horror novels to choose from both in eBook format and through interactive applications, however, Dracula: The Official Stoker Family Edition stands out from the crowd. This program retains all the shock value from the original Bram Stoker novel from 1897, while adding some great new effects, such as blood that flows across the screen (as pictured), creepy images scattered throughout (just wait until you get to the wolf – you’ll shiver) and an original music score, complete with 21 additional songs from indie rock performers, such as Adaline and Emily Spiller. (Think the Twilight soundtrack, but not nearly as nauseating.) Don’t miss your chance to curl up with this spine-tingling book.

Call of Duty: Zombies HD (Activision, $4.99)

Zombies are awesome, but Nazi zombies? That’s a completely different kind of awesome terror. Based on the special mode introduced in Call of Duty: World At War on consoles, Zombies HD has you battling fleets of the undead as you barricade open doors, grab weapons and use any space you can to stay alive through each subsequent round. You’ll need to act quickly, as each growing wave of zombies get quicker and deadlier. Fortunately, throughout each round, you’ll gain access to cooler weapons, such as the shotgun and the assault rifle, capable of sending even the strongest soldier back to hell. Lock and load.

Dead Space HD (Electronic Arts, $9.99)

We just reviewed this one and gave it the highest rating possible, and for good reason. Dead Space HD is a chilling journey through a monster-infested vessel, with terrors popping up around earn corner that you need to decapitate, kill, or stomp on in order to survive. This is one of the most stunning looking iPad games to date, right up there with Infinity Blade. It also plays very well, thanks to a neat combination of device tilting and touch-screen controls. Your best bet is to play it with the lights off, because when a Necromorph pops up around the corner, you’ll feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Guaranteed.

Splatterhouse (Namco, $2.99)

It always happens. You and your girlfriend are visiting a strange house in the woods, then all of a sudden monsters pop up out of nowhere, leave you incapacitated, and take her hostage. However, all is not lost, as you use a special mask to resurrect yourself and fight to get her back. Splatterhouse, based on the Namco arcade classic of the same name, features various stages of bloody action, as you’ll use everything from a rifle to a meat cleaver to get your girl back. There’s also a Splatter Rush Mode, in which you can kill unlimited enemies to see how high a point count you can get. Nothing beats splattering ghouls old-school style.

Resident Evil 4: iPad Edition (Capcom, $6.99)

Originally released for game consoles, Resident Evil 4 has found its way to the iPad in full high-definition glory. Or perhaps we should say gory. Anyway, you play Leon Kennedy, a special agent who visits a small city looking for the President’s daughter. However, trouble lurks when infected civilians come after him with a vengeance. Utilizing an on-screen control system that works quite sufficiently and plenty of tension, Resident Evil 4 has transitioned quite well to the iPad, and for a smaller price than other versions of the game sell for. If you like the Resident Evil franchise, don’t miss out on this entry!

And finally…the scariest app of them all…

Justin Bieber App (Jinfra, $.99)

Really…avoid this at all costs. Just run for your life.
