Video lovers rejoice, for VLC, the popular video playback client, has been ported to the iPad and will be available as early as next week.
VLC is an open-source media player popular with Mac, PC and Linux users because it can play just about any video format out there. It also has streaming and ad-skipping features.
The main advantage of VLC on the iPad is versatility. The iPad only has native support for a single file format, so it can be difficult to play video files on it. The VLC iPad app will play XviD, H.264, MPEG4, FLAC, 3GP, MP3, MPEG2 and AVI files, meaning just about any type of video you have will now play on the iPad.
VLC was made into an iPad app by developer Applidium and is currently awaiting approval from Apple. It will be free in the App Store.
