One trend we’ve noticed in the App Store is the rise of real-time strategy games. “Judgment Day War”, “Star Wars: Battle For Hoth” and “Command and Conquer” have been intriguing players with its touch-screen tactics and the ability to control armies through the fingertips.
Now, the creators of "Judgment Day War" have returned with a new iPad App that’s sure to get your attention if you’re a fan of the genre: “Modern Conflict HD.”
Now, if you’re familiar with "Judgment Day War," you’ll notice many similarities in "Modern Conflict." The storyline has been eased up a bit but the combat remains on the same level. You take command of a number of bases, each with a collection of tanks and helicopters ready to do your bidding. You simply have to put through your commands and watch them do all the dirty work.
However, it’s not all gung-ho action. There’s strategy here, and plenty of it. You’ll need to plan your attacks carefully to subdue your enemies, or run the risk of being overrun by greater forces. You’ll also need to keep a sharp eye on your base levels. If one takes too much damage or is overrun, it could soon be out of your control. Fortunately, they regenerate strength by themselves, you just need to make sure they’re protected.
The better you manage your strategy, the greater your army becomes, with additional troops and vehicles.
There are times when your taps can be misread on the screen. Miss the base by even a half an inch and you could call off a crucial attack that you’re about to set in motion. Precision is the key here, so make sure you get in some practice. Other than that, the gamepla y is deep and satisfying. On top of that, there are plenty of bonus missions that weren’t included with the original “Judgment Day” along with achievements and leaderboard support, so you can see how other warmongers are faring.
“Modern Conflict” looks and sounds great. You can keep an eye on the battlefield with hardly any problem whatsoever, and the vehicle animation and effects are very convincing. The sound effects are good, too, with tanks and planes sounding like the real deal, instead of buzzing around like flies.
There are plenty of choices right now to get your real-time strategy gaming groove on with, but at $2.99, “Modern Conflict HD” is a solid choice. And seeing as how “Judgment Day War” isn’t available anymore, this is a suitable fill-in.
